NEWCASTLE United reporter Miles Starforth rates the Magpies players after their 1-0 derby defeat against Sunderland.

Jak Alnwick: 7

Didn’t do much wrong and dealt with almost everything that came his way.

Daryl Janmaat: 6

Had his hands full marking Conor Wickham, especially in the first half.

Fabricio Coloccini: 6

On a yellow for most of the game after a rash early challenge. Not ideal.

Steven Taylor: 7

Put his body on the line for the cause, and defended well.

Paul Dummett: 6

No-nonsense defending, but was never able to get on the front foot.

Moussa Sissoko: 6

More of an influence after the break. Forced a fine save with a fierce shot seconds before Sunderland’s breakthrough.

Cheik Tiote: 6 (sub Cisse, 5)

Had to rein himself in after getting a yellow card in the first half.

Jack Colback: 6

Didn’t control the game like he had done last season in a Sunderland jersey.

Yoan Gouffran: 5 (sub Armstrong, 6)

Fortunate to keep his place, and did little to justify his selection.

Ayoze Perez: 7

A lively figure in the final third, and looked the most likely to break the deadlock.

Sammy Ameobi: 6 (sub Cabella, 5)

Never really an influence on the game.

Subs not used: Woodman, Haidara, Williamson, Riviere.
