Ivan Toney has put himself in Steve McClaren’s thoughts ahead of Newcastle United’s Capital One Cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday.

The 19-year-old striker, signed from Northampton Town this summer, scored for the club’s Under-21s against West Ham United tonight.

Winger Callum Roberts also netted in a 2-2 draw at Upton Park.

Toney – who made his senior debut in Newcastle’s second-round victory over Northampton last month – could now be involved for the senior team on Wednesday night.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren will make a number of changes for the third-round tie, which follows Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League loss to Watford at St James’s Park.

McClaren’s side have struggled for goals so far this season.

Toney cancelled out Jordan Brown’s first-half opener with a close-range shot after the hour-mark in front of a large crowd at the Boleyn Ground.

And Roberts, back from injury, looked to have claimed all three points for Newcastle with an 87th-minute strike.

The 18-year-old – who made his senior debut in the FA Cup last season – made a brilliant solo run, beating three men, before slotting the ball home.

But Martin Samuelsen levelled from the penalty spot a minute later.

Newcastle’s Under-21s, like the first team, are winless this season.
