The Netherlands international’s loan spell at Newcastle United was cruelly cut short by injury in January’s Premier League win over Chelsea.

And reports in German publication Bild claimed the Eintracht Frankfurt man has sustained a ‘very serious injury’ for a footballer with significant ligament damage, among other things, reported by his parent club’s medical team.

But the 25-year-old has taken to social media to refute those claims. On Twitter, he said: “The media always says a lot. Also about my rehabilitation, but by people who are not aware of my process. I let myself be guided in this by professionals who I trust. I work with them in full focus and on schedule.”

Willems’ injury has put a permanent move to United in doubt, with a fee in the region of £10million already agreed.
