JOHN Carver has joked new Ashington boss Steve Harmison is “crazy” to enter the world of football management.
Harmison, who was once recognised as the best fast bowler in world cricket, has taken over at the Northern League Division One side.
During his cricket playing days, he spent time at Newcastle United’s training ground to work on his fitness, and was always a vocal supporter of his hometown club.
Magpies head coach Carver has now sent an open invitation to Harmison to return to Newcastle’s Benton HQ to talk tactics – and has backed the former Durham and England ace to be a success at Ashington.
Carver said: “I can’t believe he’s got into management.
“He must be crazy – I thought he’d stick to cricket. He’s a North East legend. His family have always been connected with non-league football.
“I took an Under-21 side up there and played in a testimonial game for him. He deserves it.
“He might come in and have a cup of tea and go through some tactics.
“He’s more than welcome to do that.
“It’s great for him. He’s a big personality. I think he’ll do a decent job.”
