JONAS Gutierrez’s proposed move to Velez Sarsfield is in the balance.
The Newcastle United winger is in his native Argentina for talks over a switch to the club.
Gutierrez – who is back playing after beating testicular cancer – is out of contract at St James’s Park in the summer.
The 31-year-old had hoped to make a first-team comeback for Newcastle in the final months of his career at the club.
Speaking to the Gazette last month, the Argentina international said: “I have played in a World Cup, but if I play again for Newcastle then that will be the best moment of my career.”
But Velez, where he trained after completing a course of chemotherapy, are keen to sign him before the Argentinian transfer window closes on Sunday.
The Gazette, however, understands there is still work to be done on the proposed deal.
And Gutierrez – who started his career at Velez, who kick off their league campaign tonight – could yet return to United to see out his contract.
