'Just not good enough' - TalkSPORT pundit tears into under-performing Newcastle after Brentford cup exit

TalkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy has argued that Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Brentford on Tuesday evening was “just not good enough”.

The Magpies crashed out of the competition at the hands of the Championship club after a 1-0 loss against a much-changed Bees side.

The result drew ire from many supporters, and means that Newcastle’s half-century wait for a piece of notable silverware must go on.

For Brentford, the win put them through to a first major semi-final in their 131-year history.

Reflecting on the match on Tuesday night, Cundy argued that the Toon Army failed to press home their top flight advantage, as well as suggesting that their standard of play is well beneath where it should be.

“They were pretty poor. They weren’t great”, he told talkSPORT in the aftermath of the game.

"To be honest with you, if you’d watched the game over the course of the 90 minutes, if someone had come down from Mars and you said, ‘Which one’s the Premier League side, which one’s not?’, you wouldn’t have been able to choose.

"Brentford had chances. Newcastle had chances as well, but they just couldn’t take them.”

Host Andy Goldstein replied: “Can you understand why some Newcastle fans – quite a lot of them – want Steve Bruce sacked?

"They’re mid-table. They’re 12th in the Premier League.”

Cundy said: “I’ve got to be honest, the football they play is not great.”

Goldstein responded: “Is he not just picking a team and a formation and tactics to make sure they don’t go down? He's not given a lot of tools, is he?”

“No, not really”, Cundy said.

"But I don’t know, he was given some money to spend in the summer. They strengthened.

"I actually thought some of the results and some of the performances in the early part of the season weren’t bad. They were half-decent.

"But some of the games I’ve seen with Newcastle, they are, some of them, pretty bad.

"There’s no paying public right now, maybe that’s a good thing. It’s not been brilliant.

"Today’s performance and result is just not good enough, really.”
