The goalkeeper has only made a handful of cup appearances for the club since the signing of Martin Dubravka in January 2018 – and the 29-year-old’s contract runs out next summer.

“Martin’s done an excellent job, so, as a goalkeeper, you know sometimes you can’t be (playing),” said Darlow. “But I’m 29, so I’ve still got a while left. A bit of patience, and I’ll carry on working hard and stick at it.”

Darlow joined the club from Nottingham Forest in 2014. Asked about his contractual situation, Darlow said: “I can’t comment.”

Newcastle's 5,000-strong travelling support chanted Darlow’s name at The Hawthorns.

“Look at the fans out there, they were excellent,” he said. “You’d have to be daft not to want to play for this football club. The lads do their best out on the pitch for them (the fans).

“It’s brilliant. They were noisy for the whole game. Credit to them coming down on a Tuesday night. It just shows you what the FA Cup means to the fans.”

Darlow had made his Premier League debut for United at The Hawthorns in December 2015, and he hinted at a desire to stay at the club when asked to reflect his career so far at St James’s Park.

“It’s been crazy, hasn’t it? My debut wasn’t the best,” said Darlow. “We went down that season, then the Championship. I’ve just loved being at the club so far. As long as it carries on, the better for me.”

United – who led West Brom 3-0 early in second half – were given a late scare in the fifth-round tie.

“Yeah, if it’s in the last couple of minutes, and they only need one, you’re a bit nervy,” said Darlow, who will be on the bench for Saturday’s league game against Southampton at the St Mary’s Stadium.

“It was tough in the end, but we played some excellent football for 70 minutes,” said Darlow.
