JOHN Carver took over the managerial reigns in the interim at St James’s Park in the wake of the departure of Alan Pardew and the caretaker boss is reasonably prominent, at 12/1 with Paddy Power, in the betting for who will be given the job on a permanent basis.
However, Carver’s odds were on the drift at the time of writing as punters sided with a couple of other candidates.
Tim Sherwood has been the main mover, BetVictor slashing the ex-Tottenham man from 20/1 to 6/5 in the last couple of days on the back of sustained interest, although he’s stil available at 7/4 (from 16/1) via bet365.
Jostling for favouritism alongside Sherwood is Remi Garde. The French coach, who enjoyed a stint as a player at Arsenal in the late 90s, was considered to be in the running almost from the outset and with rumours abound that the former Lyon boss has been in talks with the Magpies, he’s now a 5/2 chance courtesy of Ladbrokes.
Ajax’s Frank De Boer is another name strongly linked with the vacancy, although the Dutchman has slipped to 11/1 at betway as punters have turned their attention elsewhere and at a slightly bigger 14/1 (William Hill) is former Middlesbrough and England manager Steve McClaren.
Elsewhere, Skybet quote another ex-England boss, Glenn Hoddle, at 22/1, Winner.com chalk German coach Thomas Tuchel up at 25/1 and United old boy Temuri Ketsbaia is a 33/1 shot with BetVictor.
Amongst the more fanciful options meanwhile, are Alan Shearer, at 100/1 (Ladbrokes), BetVictor offer 100/1 about Newcastle poaching Gus Poyet from rivals Sunderland and skipper Fabricio Coloccini is also 100/1, this time at bet365, to combine his central defensive duties with the manager’s job.
