Leeds United are interested in signing Dwight Gayle.

The Championship club have enquired about the Newcastle United striker's availability.

However, Newcastle have not received a bid for Gayle, who scored 23 goals for the club last season.

Gayle, the club's No 9, didn't even make the substitute's bench for last weekend's game against West Ham United.

And Benitez explained his decision after the match, which Newcastle won 3-0.

Asked if he was left out of the squad entirely, Newcastle manager Benitez said: "No.

"He wasn’t on the bench because (Aleksandar) Mitrovic has been doing well and training well. We had two strikers (Mitrovic and Joselu), and they both scored."

Gayle has also had an issue with his hamstring, while he missed last week's Carabao Cup defeat through illness.

Newcastle rate Gayle in the £20million-bracket, and would only consider selling him if a replacement could be secured before Thursday night's transfer deadline.

Gayle joined the club last summer from Crystal Palace.
