Gabriel Obertan is facing up to four months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery.
The Newcastle United winger has had an operation on his hamstring in his native France.
And the club expect Obertan – who has been sidelined since late September – to be out for between "three and four months".
Obertan – who has made three Premier League starts this season – has been hit by a series of injuries over the past three years.
The 26-year-old joined from Manchester United in the summer of 2011.
Obertan is out of contract at St James's Park next summer.
Meanwhile, Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren has no fresh injury concerns ahead of tomorrow's Premier League home game against Leicester City.
