The Magpies travel to South Wales fresh from a third-round mauling of Newport’s fellow League Two side Morecambe.

But Steve Bruce’s men know they are guaranteed a tougher test – against a side with serious form for causing cup upsets.

Having beaten Championship duo Swansea and Watford in the competition so far, Newport can also call upon the memories of FA Cup victories over Leeds, Leicester and Middlesbrough in the last five years.

But who in Mike Flynn’s side poses the most threat to Newcastle’s bid to reach the quarter-finals – and how is he likely to line up?

Which players could cause Newcastle problems?

Former Norwich youngster Tristan Abrahams is a striker in form – and with happy memories of playing against the Magpies.

The 21-year-old striker has scored five goals in six games this season, including three in the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle should know about Abrahams’ pace and aerial ability, as he grabbed a goal and an assist in a 4-3 victory for Norwich U23s against their United counterparts in 2018.

If Newport cup legend Padraig Amond, who was on the bench for their League Two victory over Bolton Wanderers at the weekend, also starts tonight, he and Abrahams could be a serious handful.

Amond has scored against Tottenham, Leicester and Middlesbrugh among others in cup competitions over the last three seasons.

And one man who could be part of the supply chain for Amond and Abrahams is winger Robbie Willmott, who was working at Tesco as recently as 2017 after dropping into part-time football.

Willmott has pace to burn, and could line up as an attacking wing-back tonight.

How will Newport line up?

The Exiles will look to absorb pressure and hit Newcastle on the counter-attack, using the pace of Abrahams as an outlet.

Manager Michael Flynn has favoured a 3-5-2 formation so far this season.

Joss Labadie and Josh Sheehan may be his choice to run the central midfield, with Labadie breaking up play and Sheehan providing key passes.

Where are Newport’s weaknesses?

Regular Newport watchers have told us that Newcastle should outlast Newport for fitness, and that the League Two side can struggle to strike a balance between dwelling on the ball or trying overly ambitious passes.
