Misfit Facundo Ferreyra has final fling for Newcastle

FAREWELL ... Facundo Ferreyra.

FACUNDO Ferreyra almost certainly pulled on a Newcastle United shirt for a final time last night.

The on-loan striker has not made a competitive senior appearance for the club.

But he was handed his final run-out for United’s Under-21s in last night’s 3-2 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.

Callum Roberts and Dan Barlaser were on target for Peter Beardsley’s side, who ended the season sixth in the Under-21 Premier League’s second tier.

The game also saw a first start at reserve level for Academy top scorer Sean Longstaff.

Ferreyra, on a season-long loan from Shakhtar Donestsk, played 90 minutes and set up Roberts’s fourth and final Under-21 goal of the season.

The on-loan striker has not made a competitive senior appearance for the club.

But the 24-year-old is not expected to be in contention for the club’s final two Premier League games against Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United, despite being fully fit after recovering from the back problem which sidelined him earlier in the year.

Ferreyra featured for United in pre-season, and has played in a handful of Under-21 games during his time at the club.

And the closest he has come to first-team football is the bench.

The future of Roberts, however, looks far brighter, and the forward – who turned professional this season – took to Twitter after the West Brom game.

The 18-year-old tweeted: “Been a good season overall, shame to end it on a low tonight but happy to score again. Loved working everyday and looking forward to next.”

Roberts is in Newcastle’s squad for the HKFC Citibank Soccer Sevens tournament in Hong Kong later this month.

Meanwhile, United will not be heading across the Atlantic to Texas in pre-season, according to Swansea City.

The relegation-threatened club has been involved in talks with the organisers of a six-team summer tournament in the United States.

Head coach John Carver said it was one of the “options” Newcastle were considering for pre-season.

However, Swansea City yesterday confirmed their participation in the July competition – and revealed the five other sides also due to take part.

But the name of United was not among them.

Chivas Guadalajara, Olympique Lyonnais, Raja Casablanca, Pachuca and Malaga are the other participants in the Dallas-based tournament.

Newcastle are yet to reveal any of the club’s pre-season fixtures.

Asked about the club’s pre-season plans earlier this month, Carver said: “Listen, it (Dallas) is one of the options.

“There are a number of options, nothing’s been confirmed.

“There’s all sorts going on. I’ve been involved in the process, it’s one of the options but nothing’s been nailed down.

“We’ve got, obviously, other games but nothing’s been confirmed yet.”
