Aleksandar Mitrovic’s Newcastle United career got off to a losing start at Bootham Crescent tonight.
The striker, signed from Anderlecht this month in a £13million deal, was handed his debut against York City.
But Steve McClaren’s side were beaten 2-1 by the League Two club.
Ayoze Perez was on target for Newcastle, who trailed by two goals at the interval.
McClaren left a number of his first-team players, including Jack Colback, Daryl Janmaat, Moussa Sissoko and Tim Krul, back on Tyneside.
After a making a bright start, Newcastle went behind to a 16th minute Anthony Straker goal.
A triliast put York 2-0 up four minutes later, and United were fortunate to go into the break trailing by only two goals.
McClaren’s side were careless with and without the ball in a costly 20-minute spell.
But Newcastle, backed by around 1,750 travelling fans, improved after the break, and Perez pulled a goal back from close range in the 75th minute after Jamaal Lascelles flicked on a corner to him at the far post.
United, however, couldn’t force an equaliser in the dying minutes.
