MEHDI Abeid has withdrawn from Algeria’s squad for the African Cup of Nations through injury – which could hand Newcastle United a welcome boost.
Abeid has been struggling with a toe injury, and hasn’t played for Newcastle since their 1-1 draw with Burnley last month.
He was set to fly out with Algeria to Equatorial Guinea for the tournament which starts on September 17, but has been replaced in the squad.
His withdrawl could boost Newcastle if he can get himself fit soon, with fellow midfielder Cheik Tiote having played his last game before joining up with Ivory Coast.
Abeid, 22, has impressed for United this season after spending last campaign on loan.
