Both QPR striker Charlie Austin and Aleksandar Mitrovic, of Anderlecht, have been linked with moves to Newcastle and McClaren insists the club continues to work hard behind the scenes.ć

It comes as new signing Georginio Wijnaldum is set to fly to the USA to link up with his Newcastle United team-mates.

The midfielder joined the club last week from PSV Eindhoven in a £14.5million deal.

Speaking in America this morning, McClaren said: “The plans continue and work goes on behind the scenes back home.

“We’re close.

“Wijnaldum comes out tomorrow and that will be good.

“We’ll get him in with the boys.

“With recruitment we will wait and see.”

Newcastle went down 2-1 to Club Atlas in Milwaukee in the early hours of this morning and contained a starting XI which had no new players with 24-year-old Wijnaldum now ready to join the club’s pre-season tour.

And Wijnaldum will meet his new colleagues in California ahead of Saturday’s game against Sacramento Republic.
