Newcastle's attempts to land Southampton full-back Matt Targett on loan have fallen through.
With time ticking away at the end of the window the Magpies had turned to the England youth international to plug the gap left behind after Paul Dummett was ruled out until with injury.
But despite a move to loan the player for the season, the plug has been pulled on the deal.
Instead Rafa Benitez will now have to do without a fit, recognised left-back at the club post-international break, should no further business be conducted between now and 11pm.
Meanwhile, the Magpies are reported to have sanctioned a loan move for Achraf Lazaar to Benevento.
The move appeared to break down earlier today, with United toying with the idea of keeping the Moroccan international.
But United have relented, despite not, as yet, getting left sided cover in through the door.
