MEMBERS of Newcastle United’s fans forum have called on Mike Ashley to make a public ‘statement of intent’ to address growing disillusionment among the fanbase.
Several thousand supporters stayed away from Sunday’s home game against Tottenham in protest at owner Ashley’s running of the club.
And now the 14-strong fans forum – which meets with the club three or four times a season to discuss a range of issues – wants Ashley to make an ‘urgent’ response.
In an open letter to the club’s board, the forum said: “While we fully appreciate the club’s view on fan communication, we feel that the time has come to show our fans respect and make some king of ‘statement of intent’ outlining your proposals to overturn the negativity surrounding NUFC.
“We would very much prefer this statement to come from Mike Ashley himself, owner of NUFC.”
The forum has called on Ashley to explain the club’s view on the boycott made by many supporters at Sunday’s game, as well as the plans United have to ‘correct’ the current plight.
The club has also been asked to reveal why Jonas Gutierrez was left out of the squad for the Spurs game, and talk about the plan going forward regarding the head coach role.
The forum added: “We are in total agreement that we feel that it is appropriate to ask for an urgent response.
“Any suggestion that we should wait until our final meeting of the year would be met with our overwhelming disapproval.”
The forum is not expected to meet with the club again until after the end of the season.
