NEWCASTLE United are looking to step up their bid to sign French star Remy Cabella before the World Cup begins.
The Magpies have reignited their interest in the attacking midfielder after having a bid for the Montpellier star rejected in January.
Cabella and Lyon’s Clement Grenier have been targeted as potential replacements for Yohan Cabaye, who left for Paris St Germain in the last transfer window.
And Cabella’s comments over the weekend, where he revealed he had spoken to Cabaye about Newcastle, has given United hope in their pursuit of the 24-year-old.
Reports in France yesterday claimed Newcastle have already offered €8m for the player, but that Montpellier chairman Louis Nicollin wants €10m.
Cabella is on standby for France’s World Cup squad, and providing he isn’t called up he is hoping he can have his future resolved before the start of the competition so that he can enjoy his holidays.
One player already enjoying his summer break is Hatem Ben Arfa, who sent Newcastle fans a message from his sun lounger.
The enigmatic Frenchman took to social media to reveal he is looking forward to a ‘big season’ when he gets back.
Whether that is with Newcastle remains to be seen, with Ben Arfa having fallen out with manager Alan Pardew towards the end of the campaign.
The 27-year-old is understood to be one of the players the Magpies are willing to offload during the summer, along with fellow Frenchmen Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan.
However, the winger revealed in an explosive interview last month that he was prepared to stay at Newcastle and fight for his place.
Ben Arfa posted a video on Instagram where he said: “Hi to all my fans. I’m enjoying myself on holiday before the big season.”
