Newcastle ‘in discussions’ with Northampton over teenage striker Ivan Toney

Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder has confirmed Newcastle United’s interest in teenage striker Ivan Toney.

Toney has been linked with a £300,000 move to St James’s Park.

There has been discussions – we can’t get away from that – and as I have said before, Ivan is a very, very good young player that will attract interest.

And the 19-year-old was left out of Northampton’s squad for the League Two club’s pre-season opener against Sileby Rangers.

Asked about Toney’s future, Wilder told the Northampton Chronicle: “There has been speculation, and maybe it is one for the chairman to answer.

“There has been discussions – we can’t get away from that – and as I have said before, Ivan is a very, very good young player that will attract interest.

“I will know more where we are after I have had discussions with the chairman today and tomorrow.

“If it is kicked on, then we’ll wait and see, and if it isn’t then Ivan will be involved on Tuesday night in the game (at Worthing).”

Newcastle chief scout Graham Carr – who had spells at Northampton as player and manager – is a regular at the club’s Sixfields Stadium home.
