Newcastle linked with striker swoop – but no move for Manchester United ace

Newcastle United were in the headlines in today’s newspapers – with players linked to signing for them as well as leaving St James’s Park.

It’s been a busy week on the transfer front for the Magpies, with Steve McClaren looking to tie up a deal for Chancel Mbemba subject to visa issues.

But today’s papers also had a number of other Newcastle-related stories, including talk of a bid for Manchester United’s Geordie midfielder Michael Carrick.

That one sounds far-fetched, however, given the Wallsend-born star is 33 and Newcastle aren’t looking to sign anyone over the age of 27.
