Newcastle United have enquired about a loan deal for Southampton's Matt Targett, according to a report.
The defender – who missed most of last season through injury – signed a new five-year deal at the club this month.
And Targett has reportedly caught the eye of Rafa Benitez, who is looking to sign a left-back before tonight's transfer deadline.
Sky Sports News reporter Keith Downie tweeted: "We understand Rafa Benitez has made a loan enquiry for Southampton left back Matt Targett."
Newcastle are hoping to move left-back Achraf Lazaar out of the club today.
The 25-year-old, signed from Palermo last summer, has been involved in talks with a number of Serie A clubs.
Reports in Italy claim that Lazaar has agreed a loan move to Benevento.
