And Millwall manager Neil Harris is waiting for “feedback” from the 24-year-old midfielder’s parent club.
“We’re not sure what the situation is going to be with Shane until Newcastle give some feedback,” said Harris.
“Fergie’s really enjoyed his time here and enjoyed playing regularly.
“He’s had limited opportunities over the last few years, and has probably got better while he’s been with us.
“He’s certainly one we’d like to extend and keep with us for as long as possible.
“He’s made a really good impression, and is at a good age. He’s a young man with a huge hunger to play regularly.
“He’s missed a lot of football over the last few years through injury and lack of opportunity. He’s one we’re certainly pushing hard for.
“Again, that’ll be down to Newcastle to see what they want to do.
“I really like Fergie, he gives us really good balance with his left foot.”
Ferguson hasn’t played a competitive first-team game for Newcastle in more than three years.
The Northern Ireland international said: “It’s great to be back playing football.”
