Nottingham Forest hope to clinch the signing of Jack Colback.
Colback was frozen out at Newcastle United by Rafa Benitez a year ago.
Benitez told Colback to find a new club last summer, and the midfielder joined Nottingham Forest on loan in January.
Colback – who has a year left on his Newcastle deal – impressed at the City Ground, and the 28-year-old is on Aitor Karanka's summer transfer shortlist.
"I know Jack, and Jack knows me and the club,” Karanka told the Nottingham Post. “He was really important here last season. It's true that he is on our list.
“We have other players on the list, because he's not our player and we cannot say that he is yet. We have to find a solution to that as soon as possible.
"But if it's not Jack, then we will find another target.”
A sticking point will be Colback's reported £40,000-a-week wage at United.
