Newcastle United’s players and staff today observed a minute’s silence in memory of John Alder and Liam Sweeney.

It is a year to the day since Alder and Sweeney, travelling to New Zealand to watch the club play two pre-season games, tragically lost their lives aboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, which was downed by a missile as it passed above eastern Ukraine.

Head coach McClaren and his squad stood in silence around the centre circle at a pitch at Sacramento State University before this morning’s training session.

Newcastle, on a three-game tour of the USA, take on Sacramento Republic at Bonney Field in the early hours of Sunday morning.
