Newcastle United survived a scare to progress to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup tonight.
Away to non-league Ilkeston, Mackenzie Heaney was the star of the show as the Magpies built a 3-0 interval lead, but Ilkeston fought back strongly in the second half, getting back to 3-2 and making the Tynesiders hang on for victory.
Lewis McNall finished off a Heaney free=kick from close range for Newcastle’s opener, then Heaney’s deflected effort made it 2-0. Heaney had a hand in the third, too, cutting inside from the flank to drive in a shot, which took a big deflection off McNall to beat the keeper.
Roy Lee scored twice in three minutes midway through the second half as Ilkeston rallied brilliantly, to the delight of a crowd of 927, but an equaliser eluded them.
Newcastle will host AFC Wimbledon in the fourth round, a tie to be played by January 16.
