Newcastle’s season has taken a turn for the better in the past fortnight after unexpected wins over Liverpool and Tottenham.

The Magpies therefore go into the Christmas period full of confidence and they are warm favourites at 21/20 (SkyBet) to claim three more points against a hapless Aston Villa team.

The Villans are in a mess at the bottom of the Premier League, although, Remi Garde’s team did enjoy a 1-1 draw in their last away match and BetVictor offer 5/2 that this clash ends all square.

Stan James chalk up 3/1 that the Midlands side leave St James’s Park with three precious points.

Even so, Steve McClaren’s team have some momentum after that last-gasp victory at White Hart Lane, with Ladbrokes offering 11/4 about Newcastle with a -1 goal handicap.

That means winning by two or more, something they have managed against Liverpool and Norwich this season.

Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic are both pressing for a recall after the pair came off the bench to score against Tottenham last Sunday.

Perez is 11/2 (BetVictor) to break the deadlock against a Villa side who look defensively porous, while Mitrovic has been priced at 9/2 (William Hill) to get that all-important first goal.

Perhaps the Magpies will get home by a tight margin of victory and a 2-1 scoreline in favour of the Tyneside club is 17/2 with bet365.

Paddy Power have 6/1 that the game finishes 1-1, while Villa are 14/1 (bet365) to enjoy a 2-1 victory of their own.
