Chancel Mbemba is set to formally join Newcastle United today – but the club is no nearer to signing Charlie Austin.
Anderlecht defender Mbemba was yesterday on Tyneside to complete an £8million move to St James’s Park.
The 20-year-old will become the club’s third summer signing, following Georginio Wijnaldum and Alexsandar Mitrovic to Newcastle.
It will mean United have spent more than £35million in the transfer window.
Queens Park Rangers striker Austin is another target, but United will not meet his club’s £15million valuation.
The other teams chasing Austin are also reluctant meet the asking price.
And Austin, 26, is prepared to see out the final year of his Loftus Road contract and leave on a free transfer next summer.
QPR head coach Chris Ramsey has admitted the club has had bids for Austin.
“There have been offers,” said Ramsey. “With a player of Charlie’s ability, there will always be speculation.
“At the moment, there has been nothing concrete. We’ve had offers that we’ve rejected, and we’ve had offers that Charlie himself has not been happy to take on.
“At the moment, he’s a QPR player and he’s working hard in training. I’m having the idea that he will be here into the season. If he is here during the season then he is going to be someone that we want to use.”
