Newcastle United are set to make an 11th-hour bid to sign Divock Origi on loan.
Rafa Benitez is looking to sign a striker before Thursday night's transfer deadline.
And Benitez is ready to return for Origi, who is attracting interest from a number of clubs across Europe.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is willing to loan out the Belgium international, who wants to be playing regular football ahead of the World Cup next summer.
Origi, 22, has reportedly been offered to AS Monaco on loan as part of a £74million bid for forward Thomas Lemar.
United, also interested in Maccabi Tel Aviv striker Vidar Orn Kjartansson, are pursuing a number of targets in the final days of the window.
The club could even sell Dwight Gayle before the deadline – if a replacement could be secured in time.
Gayle was left out of Benitez's squad for last weekend's Premier League game against West Ham United, which Newcastle won 3-0.
Meanwhile, Norwich City have agreed a fee with Newcastle for defender Grant Hanley, and midfielder Jack Colback is a target for Hull City.
The Gazette reported earlier this month that Colback was set to miss out on a place in Benitez's 25-man Premier League squad.
