Newcastle target Remi Garde hailed – by Sunderland defender Anthony Reveillere

SABBATICAL ... Remi Garde.

POTENTIAL Newcastle United coach Remi Garde has been hailed – by Sunderland star Anthony Reveillere.

Frenchman Garde has this week again been linked with the head coach job at the Magpies.

BACKING ... Reveillere.

BACKING ... Reveillere.

The former Arsenal defender is taking a sabbatical from football after three years at Lyon, but was one of the coaches linked with the Newcastle position after Alan Pardew’s departure.

Newcastle held talks with the 48-year-old, but they were put on hold when John Carver was put in charge of team affairs until the end of the season.

Garde was at the Etihad Staduium on Saturday to watch the Magpies trounced by Manchester City, and spoke about the Toon job afterwards.

And Sunderland defender Reveillere, who spent two seasons under Garde at Lyon, would relish the chance to renew acquaintances with his old boss in the North East.

It would be a good opportunity for him, although we’d have to make sure we keep winning against them!

“I had two or three years working under him at Lyon and he’s got a good mind for things,” said Reveillere.

“He knows England after playing at Arsenal, and he can speak English which is important.

“He’s not a stranger to the Premier League. He knows the English mentality.

“It would be a good opportunity for him, although we’d have to make sure we keep winning against them!”

Reveillere made almost 300 appearances for Lyon during 10 years at the club, the last two of which saw him work under Garde.

The pair helped Lyon lift the French Cup in 2012 before Garde quit the club the following summer for personal reasons.

Garde refused to rule out a return to management – but when asked about Newcastle said he wanted to respect a ‘duty of confidentiality’ with the club.

He said: Garde said: “I have a duty of confidentiality in this matter to Newcastle then I’ll be very honest and very integrated with respect to the leaders of Newcastle, I cannot say more.”

“I cannot say I’m desperate to return on a bench, far from it. But I can easily say that I loved this coaching experience.

“I needed to recover and rejuvenate myself but I had probably caught a virus to start this profession.

“I do not close the door to anything or to take another year off, or, to dive into a project that would suit me.”
