Aleksandar Mitrovic is ready to finally get his Newcastle United career up and running – as the clock ticks down on the start of the season.

Mitrovic signed for the club earlier this month in a £13million deal.

He’s had a few days away on his own because of the situation.

But the 20-year-old is yet to meet his new team-mates, who were in the USA when he flew into Tyneside to formally join the club.

Mitrovic trained with former club Anderlecht while he obtained a visa.

The striker, however, was due to train with his United colleagues today ahead of tomorrow night’s friendly against York City.

The Serbia international could be involved against York at Bootham Crescent.

“He’s been training with Anderlecht,” said head coach Steve McClaren, whose side open their Premier League campaign with a home game against Southampton on August 9.

“He’s had a few days away on his own because of the situation.

“But we expect him to come in on Tuesday and we’ll assess him and see whether he’s ready, and then see if he’s right for a few minutes on Wednesday whether he should wait until Saturday (against Borussia Monchengladbach).”

Defender Chancel Mbemba is set to formally join the club at the end of the week once the club has sorted visa issues out with the Football Association.

But it means that McClaren has only worked with one of the club’s new signings – midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum – so far, and he’s keen to see all three on the training field.

McClaren, however, was coy on the prospect of more signings, though the club is understood to be looking to bring in at least two more players.

“We’ve really been concentrating on those first few deals,” said McClaren.

“We were really concentrating on getting Wijnaldum in, which we’ve done, and before we start thinking about anybody else, I’d like to see the other two out there because that’ll give us a much better idea of where we’re at.

“I haven’t been able to see Mitrovic or Mbemba since coming back from the States yet, so let’s deal with one thing at a time and get them out there training and integrated into the squad.

“Then we’ll wait for further developments if they happen.”
