Senegal midfielder Henri Saivet could be Newcastle United’s first signing of the January transfer window – if they can beat off competition from other Premier League clubs.
The Magpies are reported to be in advanced talks with the 25-year-old Bordeaux player.
Saivet has enjoyed a successful first half of the campaign in Ligue 1, having been moved into a central role from his previous position as a winger.
Southampton and Everton have also been linked with international, after he impressed against Liverpool in the Europa League this season.
Whether he is the creative midfielder Newcastle desperately need in the centre of the park remains to be seen. He has scored twice in 17 games for Bordeaux, and has struggled with a variety of injuries in recent seasons.
Saivet initially played for France Under-21s, but elected to play for Senegal, the country of his birth, at senior level.
He has 18 months left on his contract at Bordeaux and could be available for as little as £2.5million.
Newcastle have also been linked again with Saivet’s Bordeaux team-mate Diego Rolan.
The Uruguayan striker has long been reported to be a transfer target for the Magpies, with West Brom also keeping tabs on him.
The 22-year-old has only scored four times this season, however.
Newcastle continue to monitor the situation with Charlie Austin, as the QPR striker’s situation remains in doubt.
Austin – and Rangers – must decide whether he stays at Loftus Road for the rest of the season, after which he will be out of contract and able to move for free.
Alan Pardew has been linked with a move to bring the striker to Crystal Palace, but Newcastle remain in the hunt.
