ASHLEY Young claimed all three points for Manchester United with a late goal at St James’s Park tonight.
Young’s 89th-minute strike gave Louis van Gaal’s side a 1-0 win over Newcastle United.
But John Carver’s team were aggrieved at an early penalty incident.
And the match was also marred by a spitting incident.
But Newcastle were left fuming after Wythenshawe-based referee Anthony Taylor did not award a 10th-minute penalty after Emmanuel Riviere was brought down in the box by Chris Smalling.
And Papiss Demba Cisse and Jonny Evans appeared to spit at each other later in the first half.
Newcastle winger Jonas Gutierrez, given the all-clear after treatment for testicular cancer late last year, made his long-awaited comeback off the bench.
There were two moments of controversy in a goalless first half.
Riviere was brought down in the box by a crude block from Smalling, but Taylor inexplicably waved away Newcastle’s penalty appeals.
While Taylor’s sightline was blocked, assistant referee Stephen Child had a clear view of the incident.
Later in the half, Cisse and Evans appeared to spit at each other after tangling.
The game came to life after the break.
Tim Krul – who had stopped a Marouane Fellaini header late in the first half – made a superb double save. He stopped efforts from Fellaini and Ashley Young.
Carver replaced Ryan Taylor with Gutierrez, and Ayoze Perez came on for Riviere.
Perez took the ball off Man United substitute Adnan Januzaj and raced upfield before rolling it to Cisse, who slipped and missed the target.
But Young made no mistake a minute from the end of normal time after some hesitant defending led to a poor kick from Krul.
Newcastle – next in action on March 15 when they take on Everton at Goodison Park – remain 11th in the Premier League.
