Newcastle United’s hopes of a run in the Capital One Cup were dashed after a shameful defeat to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

Richard Mennear gives his player ratings below:

Tim Krul: Made two routine saves first half, couldn’t prevent the winner....5/10

Daryl Janmaat: Captain for the night and Newcastle’s most attacking player, again. Taken off ill at HT.....6/10

Jamaal Lascelles: In for Coloccini at centre-back and held his own....5/10

Mike Williamson: Needed to be more commanding and dominate the Sheff Wed forwards...4/10

Chancel Mbemba: Played out of position at left-back and was left floundering. Saw one shot from 30-yards go out for throw in...4/10

Vurnon Anita: Was busy in the middle but didn’t trouble Wednesday...5/10

Moussa Sissoko: Awful shot just before the break. Newcastle needed a bigger performance from him. No leadership....3/10

Gabriel Obertan: Saw enough of the ball out wide first half but lacked ideas and a killer pass when he got in the final third....5/10

Florian Thauvin: Had a nightmare. Kept losing possession and did nothing with it when he had the ball. Awful. Subbed at HT....2/10

Siem De Jong. Led the line but was feeding off scraps. Had to keep dropping deep to get the ball. Missed two good chances late on. Poor...5/10

Kevin Mbabu (for Janmaat): Made his debut for the club at right-back and could easily have been sent off....5/10

Ayoze Perez (for Thauvin): At least looked like he wanted to play, lively up front...6/10

Ivan Toney (for Obertan): Put himself about but Wednesday defence coped well....5/10
