We’re already into the second international break of the season with Newcastle sitting seventh in the Premier League table with 12 points after seven games. The Magpies have also progressed to the last-16 of the Carabao Cup with wins over Nottingham Forest and AFC Wimbledon.
Despite a positive start in terms of results, Newcastle have largely struggled when it comes to performance levels.
Nine games in total is hardly a large sample size but we’ll look at every Newcastle player who has started at least one game so far this season. That rules out Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy, Mark Gillespie, Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Targett, Alex Murphy, Lewis Miley and Callum Wilson from being considered.
Vlachodimos is the only player of those to have played any first-team minutes this season as he came off the bench and kept a clean sheet in the 1-0 Carabao Cup win against AFC Wimbledon earlier this month. The Greek international has otherwise struggled to get a look in with the 0-0 draw against Everton last time out the only time he has been included as part of Newcastle’s matchday squad in the Premier League so far.

17. Sean Longstaff - 6
Has had a steady start to the season all things considered. Scoring the crucial penalty to send Newcastle through against Nottingham Forest has been his best moment so far. the return of Tonali has seen his impact drop off though he made an encouraging substitute appearance last time out at Everton. | Getty Images
18. Bruno Guimaraes - 7
Named Newcastle captain for the new season but struggled to find his usual consistency in the opening five games. His mistake against Fulham was a low point but he has since responded well with positive displays against Manchester City, Wimbledon and Everton. | Getty Images
19. Alexander Isak - 6
Last season's top scorer with 25 goals has struggled to reach those levels so far this season with just one goal to his name. A broken toe has kept him out of the last three matches as he looks to return to action next weekend. Newcastle need to find a way of making him impact games once again as it has been a disappointing start by his high standards. | Getty Images
20. Will Osula - 5
Started the Carabao Cup game against Wimbledon and looked lively despite a lack of cutting edge in and around the penalty area. Has only had a brief runout in the Premier League so it's too soon to tell regarding the 21-year-old. But his lack of minutes mean it's been a slightly underwhelming start for the young forward. | Getty Images
