The latest transfer talk from St James Park as Newcastle United prepare for the January transfer window.

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have been told they are about to be priced out of a move for one in-form player linked with a move to both Premier League clubs.

The Magpies are reportedly keen to add a winger to their squad during the January transfer window as uncertainty remains over Miguel Almiron’s long-term future at St James Park as the Paraguay international enters the final 18 months of his current deal in the new year. The former Atlanta United star has been strongly linked with moves to the Saudi Pro League and a return to the MLS - and a more recent report suggested clubs in Brazil were also monitoring his situation on Tyneside.

Newcastle made a late move for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga in the final hours of the January transfer window - but the offer was quickly rebuffed by their Premier League rivals. Interest in the former Manchester United man is believed to remain alive and the Magpies hierarchy could revisit their attempts to land the Sweden international in the new year. However, both Newcastle and Spurs have also been suggested as possible suitors for Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo as he continues to impress for the Cherries.

The former Bristol City winger joined Bournemouth in a £10m deal during the summer of 2023 and scored eight goals and provided two assists in 36 appearances in all competitions during his first season at the Vitality Stadium. He has made an impressive start to the current campaign with three goals and an assist in nine appearances and that has reportedly provoked interest from Newcastle and Spurs in recent weeks as both clubs prepare for the January transfer window. However, former Spurs and West Ham United scout Mick Brown believes Bournemouth may set their asking price too high to ensure they retain the services of their prize asset.

When asked if Semenyo could move, he told Football Insider: “No is the short answer, clubs won’t pay that price. From what I’ve seen of him, he’s improved and done better than I would have expected. He’s all-hearted, he gives everything he’s got and he’s very talented in possession. He’s also worked very hard to improve and step up. But will Newcastle pay £40-50million for him? Not based on what I’ve heard. Look at Harvey Barnes, for example, who has struggled to get into the team. Is Semenyo much better than him? They won’t pay that sort of fee if he isn’t going to be a nailed-on starter. It wasn’t that long ago they were forced to get rid of players for PSR reasons, and we know they’re still wary of falling into that trap again. So I think they’ll be put off of a move for a fee like that, even if the interest is there.”
