Wow moment

Newcastle tried and failed to re-sign Townsend in January's transfer window.

But United are ready to go back for the Crystal Palace winger.

The club could look to take advantage of the uncertainty at Selhurst Park in the wake of Sam Allardyce's departure.

Townsend, it's fair to say, was surprised to see Sam Allardyce quit his job at Palace yesterday.

The former United winger tweeted the word "wow" after news broke of Allardyce's departure.

And Newcastle fans, hoping to see him back at St James's Park this summer, quickly reacted to the tweet.

One told him to "get your train booked", while another offered him a lift (and takeaway en route) to Tyneside.

So solid

Clark's first season at Newcastle couldn't have gone any better.

The 27-year-old, outstanding in the heart of Rafa Benitez's back four, helped the club win the Championship trophy.

“For me, personally, I have really enjoyed this season,” he said. “It’s easy to say that after we are up, but it has been fantastic for me.

“Promotion was our aim from the start of the season.

“We all worked so hard, throughout the whole of the season to achieve it – the staff, the players.”
