Steve Bruce says Newcastle United failed with a near-£40million bid for a midfielder.

The club has signed three players – Danny Rose, Valentino Lazaro and Nabil Bentaleb – on loan this window, and Bruce, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s game against Norwich City at St James’s Park, has revealed that a bid was tabled for a midfielder, reportedly Lille’s Boubakary Soumare.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline, head coach Bruce said: “We had a bid accepted which would have almost got to our record transfer eight days ago accepted by the club.

“Unfortunately, the player wanted to stay where he was. We were quite active, but we have had to wait and see where it takes us. We got past the club. We had it accepted, but the player wanted to stay where he was.”
