Newcastle United legend urges caution on new deal for in-form Jacob Murphy

Newcastle United legend Rob Lee believes the club should be ‘careful’ when considering whether in-form Jacob Murphy is worth a new long-term deal.

The Magpies are understood to be in talks with the Newcastle supporting winger, who has been a revelation at right wing-back when called upon this season.

And while Lee is impressed by former Norwich City man Murphy’s form he has questioned the player’s consistency – and the club’s policy of dishing out new deals.

“I like Jacob Murphy, but we’ve got to be very careful because has he played well all season? I don’t think he has and you’ve got to be consistent to earn a new deal,” he said to Football Fancast.

“He’s been excellent in the last few games but I think with the way Newcastle are dishing out long contracts at the minute, we surely need to see consistency from the players before we start giving them new deals.”
