Bruce’s side were drawn at home in the sixth round of the competition – but face last year’s FA Cup and Premier League champions Manchester City on the weekend of March 20/21/22.

Just 90 minutes of football sit between Newcastle and a return to Wembley for the first time since a 2-1 semi-final defeat to a Gus Poyet-inspired Chelsea in 2000.

And Bruce is calling for fans to grasp this opportunity to get behind his players, despite the ‘tough’ task ahead.

“We couldn’t have asked for a tougher opponent in the competition, but it’s great to get a home tie,” Bruce told the club’s official website.

“It would be fantastic to fill St. James’ Park and experience the atmosphere that a big FA Cup quarter final can bring.”

The Magpies secured their place in the last eight with a 3-2 win over Championship leaders West Brom on Tuesday night. That follows on from their replay wins over League One duo Rochdale, in round three, and Oxford in round four.

United have not reached this stage of the competition since 2006, when they were beaten by Chelsea 1-0 courtesy of a John Terry goal.

Pep Guardiola’s City have won six of the last seven domestic trophies up for grabs. They reached this stage of the competition by seeing off Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 on Wednesday.

No exact date and time have been set for the clash.
