Newcastle United news: Benitez on Gayle, going top of the league – and the club's HUGE support

Newcastle United lead the Championship for the first time this season after last night's win at Barnsley.

Two goals from Dwight Gayle gave the club a 2-0 win at Oakwell.

And the result saw Newcastle move a point clear of Norwich City, held to a 2-2 draw at Fulham.

United manager Benitez paid tribute to 11-goal Gayle, and his goalscoring exploits this season, after the match.

"The team is doing well and he is the one that is taking the chances, so I am really pleased for him and for the team," said Benitez.

Benitez also had a lot to say about Newcastle's 5,501-support at Oakwell.

But he also had a cautionary message for his players, and the club's fans, as they celebrated what could prove a significant victory.

Newcastle take on Ipswich Town at St James's Park on Saturday.
