Rob Elliot had a message for Newcastle United's fans ahead of his knee operation.

The goalkeeper ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament playing for the Republic of Ireland last week.

And Elliot said on Twitter: "Operation day!! Have ordered one new acl replacement from the menu for a right knee."

Karl Darlow will be in goal for the rest of the season in the absence through injury of Elliot and Tim Krul, the relegation-threatened club's No1.

The 24-year-old has been talking to the Gazette about his unexpected chance at the second-bottom club.

Meanwhile, United manager Rafa Benitez, tipped to take over as Spain coach in the summer, has told his players not to do one thing over the coming weeks.

Find out what it is here.

Benitez, according to a report, will favour Newcastle's experienced players in the final seven games of the season.

And that could be bad news for Rolando Aarons.

Meanwhile, a United defender has made his latest comeback from injury after two years on the sidelines.
