Former Newcastle head coach Carver, meanwhile, has questioned Steve McClaren’s style of play.

Carver, working as a pundit now, believes the tactics are a concern, with Newcastle bottom of the Premier League after defeat against West Ham.

He added: “When you play this Tiki-taka football – where you keep the ball, you keep the ball – it is dead easy for West Ham just to get back in that solid shape.”

Meanwhile, young striker Ivan Toney has admitted he would be prepared to go out on loan.

The 19-year-old signed from Northampton in the summer, but said: “For now I’m just taking everything one step at a time and I’ll take any loan moves or call-ups to the first team as they come.”

Elsewhere, Newcastle fans have been having their say about what team they think McClaren should be picking for the clash against Watford on Saturday, with the piece proving one of our biggest trending stories.
