Newcastle United are hopeful of another transfer breakthrough this week.

The club is close to agreeing a deal for Atletico Madrid full-back Jesus Gamez.

And Newcastle are also looking to strengthen in central defensive following the departures of Fabricio Coloccini and Steven Taylor.

An experienced Championship defender is one player under consideration by the club, which has already signed Dwight Gayle, Matt Ritchie and Matz Sels.

United manager Rafa Benitez also has a decision to make on talented forward Adam Armstrong, who scored 20 goals for loan club Coventry City last season.

Benitez has given his thoughts on Armstrong's short-term future.

Meanwhile, Benitez yesterday outlined his coaching philosophy to Newcastle's Academy coaching staff.

Finally, former United winger Charles N'Zogbia, released by Aston Villa this summer, has turned up – on Wearside.
