Newcastle United news: Ex-defender comments on transfer budget claim as Jetro Willems steps up recovery
Former Newcastle defender Steve Howey says he can’t understand why Steve Bruce has been handed such a small transfer budget this summer.
It’s been reported the Magpies boss could be working with a transfer kitty of around £10million ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, which would significantly restrict the club’s business.
Speaking to Football Fancast, Howey said: “I find it puzzling why the budget is so small, considering how much money the club will get. Yes, I do understand about the pandemic and losses but, the club will be getting a lot of money for where they finished in the Premier League last season.
“I understand that you can’t use all of that money because of the situation with COVID but I think people are pretty surprised at how limited the budget really is.”
Encouraging Jetro Willems update
Elsewhere, former Newcastle defender Jetro Willems is stepping up his recovery following a serious knee injury.
The 27-year-old spent the first half of the 2019/20 season on loan at Newcastle and is set to become a free agent this summer when he leaves German side Eintracht Frankfurt.
Willems has been keeping himself in shape and recently posted a video on social media of himself exercising on a treadmill as he builds up his fitness.
Schar starts Euros opener
Finally, Newcastle defender Fabian Schar played 90 minutes for Switzerland in their opening match at Euro 2020.
The Swiss were held to a 1-1 with Wales in Baku as Welsh striker Kieffer Moore cancelled out Breel Embolo’s opener.
