Newcastle United came under heavy criticism after their 2-0 defeat to West Ham United - with pundits lining up to have a pot shot.

Sky Sports duo Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville were critical of the club’s transfer policy after watching the club slump to the foot of the Premier League.

“It’s the same story with Newcastle,” the former Liverpool defender said.

“There is a new manager, £40m-50m spent, but it’s still the same.”

Steve McClaren has called for his new-look side to go back to basics - just weeks into the new campaign.

Unhappy McClaren said the Hammers defeat was a wake-up call for his players.

“We’ve got talented players out there, but we didn’t do the basics well enough,” said the Toon boss.

Newcastle reporter Miles Starforth was at Upton Park, read his player ratings here - warning, they are low. Very low!

On a brighter note for McClaren, defender Paul Dummett is edging his way back to a first team return.

Dummett has been out with a hamstring injury but travelled down to London with the squad for the West Ham game and could make a return within the next 10-days.

The weekend’s game at home to Watford is likely to come too soon though.
