Newcastle United news: McClaren answers the BIG question, Wijnaldum faced Liverpool axe

Newcastle United's win over Liverpool eased the pressure on head coach Steve McClaren.

A strike from Georginio Wijnaldum and an own goal from Martin Skrtel saw McClaren's side a 2-0 victory at St James's Park yesterday.

The odds on McClaren becoming the Premier League's next managerial casualty had been slashed last week in the wake of Newcastle's 5-1 defeat to Crystal Palace.

And McClaren was asked if the result had saved his job after the match.

Ayoze Perez was left out of the starting XI – Siem de Jong started in his place – in one change.

But McClaren has revealed he considered dropping every one of his players, including Wijnaldum, in the wake of the defeat at Selhurst Park.

After the match Wijnaldum was just happy to "give something back" to the club's fans.

Meanwhile, Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp was magnanimous in defeat. Read his verdict here.
