Steve McClaren has already held transfer talks with the Newcastle United board as he looks to strengthen his squad in the summer.
The Magpies boss wants reinforcements in the new year as he looks to turn his side’s season around.
Reports today suggest Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes is a target if Newcastle look to strengthen in that department, while they have also been linked with a move for Arsenal forward Joel Campbell.
The 23-year-old attacker is down the pecking order with the Gunners, but Newcastle have a long-standing interest in the player, who scored for Costa Rica yesterday in a 1-0 win over USA.
Newcastle’s goalkeeping dilemma is responsible for the most headlines, however. As well as Valdes, ex-United shot-stopper Steve Harper has been linked with a short-term deal at his old club.
With Tim Krul and Karl Darlow injured, Rob Elliot and Freddie Woodman will be Newcastle’s two goalkeepers this weekend against Norwich.
Woodman, who kept a clean sheet yesterday for England’s U19s in their goalless draw against Italy, says he will be ready if needed by McClaren, having benefited from his loan spell at Crawley.
Woodman told thefa.com: “I know I’ll be No 2 but now after the experience I’ve gained, if a chance does come along and the gaffer needs me in the starting eleven, I’ll be doing my very best to take it and show what I can do.”
Meanwhile, the Magpies have received a triple injury boost ahead of the Norwich game.
