The forward is yet to start a Premier League game this season.

And the 26-year-old, while keen to succeed on Tyneside, suggested a return to Holland was an "option" for him if things do not change at St James's Park.

But head coach Steve McClaren has clarified de Jong's situation.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Rob Elliott, struggling with a thigh problem, remains on Tyneside – despite having been called up by the Republic of Ireland for their two-legged Euro 2016 play-off.

However, Elliot could yet play in the second leg of his country's in Dublin on Monday.

Elsewhere, Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly keen to take United's Adam Armstrong on loan in January.

The 18-year-old has scored 12 League One goals for Coventry City.

Wolves already have Newcastle defender Mike Williamson on a month-long loan, and that deal could be extended.
