Today we revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a swoop for Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez.

Perez scored in Sunday’s 6-2 win over Norwich City at St James’s Park and the 22-year-old, a revelation last season after his move from Tenerife, is preparing for Sunday’s Wear-Tyne derby against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

But Spurs are keeping tabs on him.

Toon boss Steve McClaren is looking to lift the derby day ‘hoodoo’ hanging over his club after five-straight defeats to Sunderland.

McClaren said: “Sunderland will be the favourites because of that hoodoo. We’ve got to break the hoodoo.”

And Georginio Wijnaldum is looking forward to his first derby day experience.

Wijnaldum said: ”When I walk down the street or go into the supermarket, Newcastle fans talk with me. They talk directly about this game against Sunderland.”

Meanwhile, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has been speaking ahead of the Wear-Tyne derby.

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, said: “I’d still make Sunderland slight favourites because they’re at home and the (recent) record.

“Sam has gone to West Brom, taken a 1-0 defeat, but you would expect him to keep it tight, be organised, make it difficult for Newcastle and there will be opportunities for them at the other end.”
