Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic could be set for a recall to the starting line-up for the Boxing Day clash against Everton.

Papiss Cisse - who has started the club's last three games ahead of Mitrovic - was today being assessed after suffering a muscle injury in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Aston Villa.

Cisse pulled up with what looked to be a hamstring problem in the first half.
Steve McClaren has been reflecting on the muted boos at St James's Park on Saturday after the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Despite dropping two points against basement side Villa, Newcastle remain three games unbeaten following the wins over Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

The result left the club in 17th position ahead of the Boxing Day home game against Everton.

Head coach McClaren talked of the “emotional fragility” of a crowd which has witnessed far more bad than good in recent seasons.

And finally, Newcastle's Under-21 Premier League Cup game against Everton has been postponed.

Peter Beardsley's side were due to travel to Southport's Haig Avenue on Monday, but a pitch inspection was carried out on Sunday.

And the match was called off due to a waterlogged pitch, meaning a new date must be found for the tie.

As it stands, United's next second-string fixture is not until Monday, 11th January when they are away to Aston Villa.
